It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of two storied individuals in the history of Union City.
On May 26th, the music world and our community lost Rick Derringer, passing at his Florida home at the age of 77. Derringer moved to Union City, Indiana as a young teen and proceeded to form the band, The McCoys, who would produce the famous hit, "Hang on Sloopy" in 1965. The song would soon be adopted by the Ohio State University Marching Band. Derringer's career as a musician, producer, and songwriter found him crossing paths with a multitude of artists such as Edgar and Johnny Winter, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Bonnie Tyler, and Weird Al Yankovic, which included a grammy award for his work with Yankovic.
Derringer's small town roots proved no obstacle for his highly successful career on the world stage, but he also never forgot his roots as he would still make the occasional appearance in Union City, most recently on the Artisan Crossing stage. The likeness of him and his McCoys' band members can be seen on the mural affixed to the wall of the fire department on Chestnut Street
We also mourn the passing of Doug Wright, an exemplary firefighter with an amazing 55 years of service. Doug began his service to Union City in 1968, working his way through the ranks to become Fire Chief of the Union City, Ohio department in 1998, a capacity he would hold until 2006. Doug also served on the UCO council.
Doug's lifelong dedication to serving and protecting others was a blessing beyond measure to the Union City community and beyond.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Rick and Doug, and we are thankful for the indelible mark they have left on their respective communities.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Restoration Work Begins on the Historic Governor Isaac P. Gray Mansion in Union City Union City, IN & OH –
The City of Union City is proud to announce the commencement of restoration efforts on the historic Governor Isaac P. Gray Mansion, located at the corner of W Pearl Street and N Howard Street. This significant project will preserve and enhance one of the community’s most treasured landmarks, ensuring its legacy for future generations.
Governor Isaac P. Gray, a notable figure in Indiana’s political history, settled in Union City in 1855 as a dry goods merchant before embarking on a distinguished career in public service. Born in Pennsylvania in 1828, Gray rose from humble Quaker beginnings to serve as a Union Army colonel during the Civil War, a state senator, lieutenant governor, and ultimately, the 18th and 20th Governor of Indiana. His influence extended beyond state politics, playing a critical role in the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment, which granted African American men the right to vote. Later, he was appointed as the U.S. Minister to Mexico in 1893.
As part of the restoration efforts, the City of Union City extends its deepest gratitude to Matt Thompson of America’s Decorative Concrete of Union City, Ohio, for his gracious donation of the concrete work being performed on the corner in front of the mansion. This generous contribution will provide a strong foundation for the site’s beautification and historical significance.
Once completed, the space will feature a statue of Governor Gray along with a flagpole, signifying the importance of the area and honoring the legacy of one of Indiana’s most influential political figures. These additions will serve as a lasting tribute and a point of pride for the community.
"The restoration of the Governor Gray Mansion is a significant step in honoring our past while investing in our future,” said Mayor Chad Spence. “This project not only preserves an important piece of our community’s history but also contributes to the ongoing revitalization of Union City. We are especially grateful to Matt Thompson for his generosity in making this vision a reality.”
The community will have many opportunities to support and engage with the restoration efforts, including volunteer initiatives and fundraising campaigns. Updates on the progress of the project will be shared through the city’s official channels and public meetings.
For more information, please contact Mayor Chad Spence at the City Building 765-964-3700.
