Historic brick building under construction with excavator, fenced work area, and a worker in safety gear on a downtown street.

The City of Union City has announced the start of a critical structural stabilization and façade restoration project at 212 N. Columbia Street. This work is made possible through an $82,025 Rural Development Block Grant (RDBG) awarded by USDA Rural Development.

This project marks an important step in preserving the safety and historic character of Union City’s downtown district. The building has experienced decades of deterioration due to limited maintenance, leading to structural concerns that required immediate attention.

One of the most serious issues occurred when second-floor window arches failed, causing bricks to fall onto the sidewalk below. After acquiring the property, the City conducted a full structural evaluation, which found that the building’s original design did not adequately support the second floor, contributing to ongoing deterioration.

To address these issues and ensure long-term stability, the project includes:

  • Installation of new footers and foundation support

  • Placement of structural columns beneath the second floor

  • Reconstruction of the west wall due to significant structural damage

These improvements are designed to provide lasting structural integrity and ensure the building remains safe for years to come.

While some modest changes to the building’s appearance are expected, all updates have been carefully reviewed and approved through the required historic preservation process. Maintaining the historic character of downtown Union City remains a top priority.

“This project is an important investment in both public safety and historic preservation,” said Mayor Chad Spence. “Our goal is to stabilize and preserve this structure while continuing to protect the architectural integrity of our downtown.”

This effort is part of a broader initiative to preserve and revitalize historic properties throughout Union City. By addressing long-standing structural challenges, the City aims to support future redevelopment and strengthen the local economy.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to use caution when traveling near the construction area. Updates will be shared as the project progresses.
