Lights at Harter Park with Larry Ampspaugh faded in the background

Union City is mourning the loss of one of its most dedicated visionaries and beloved community leaders. Larry Allen Amspaugh, 71, passed away peacefully at his home on September 1, 2025, surrounded by family. Known fondly by many as “Mr. Christmas,” Larry’s legacy shines brightest through his creation of A Community Christmas at Harter Park, which this year celebrates its 20th season.

Long before the first lights twinkled across Harter Park, Larry was already sharing his dream with city officials, civic groups, and anyone who would listen. His persistence paid off when, on November 24, 2006, the gates opened for the very first A Community Christmas. What began with fewer than 100 donated strands of lights has blossomed into a regional holiday treasure, featuring more than 4.5 million lights across 68 acres. Each year, the display draws over 6,000 cars filled with families eager to experience the magic.

For Larry, the event was never about recognition. He often reminded volunteers that it was called a “Community” Christmas for a reason. He believed every single person who contributed—whether stringing lights, managing the gift shop, or welcoming cars at the entrance—was part of something bigger than themselves. Still, few could match Larry’s tireless devotion: from troubleshooting electrical issues to manning the exit booth on Christmas Eve and Christmas night, candy canes in hand, his presence became as much a tradition as the lights themselves.

Larry’s vision left a lasting mark not only through the Christmas display but also in permanent additions to Union City’s landscape. His leadership helped bring about a covered bridge, a storage barn to support the growing display, and an outdoor amphitheater in Harter Park that continues to host community events today.

As the 20th season of A Community Christmas begins on November 28, the lights will carry new meaning. They will shine in honor of the man whose joy, determination, and humility brought them to life. Larry’s warm smile, servant’s heart, and relentless passion for bringing joy to others will never be forgotten.

Union City owes Larry Amspaugh a debt of gratitude. Though he is no longer with us, every sparkle of light in Harter Park will continue to remind us of the gift he gave—a tradition that binds our community together year after year.

Thank you Larry.
