Union City — On the afternoon of June 2, 2025, officers from the Union City Police Department were alerted to a potential suicide threat involving a male subject in the 500 block of N. High St. The individual, later identified as Theodore Heiligenberg, of Union City, Indiana, was reportedly threatening “suicide by cop” and was believed to be armed.
Upon arriving in the area, officers located Heiligenberg sitting outside his residence. He was in possession of a loaded handgun and a sawed-off shotgun. Attempts were made to establish contact with Heiligenberg in an effort to de-escalate the situation. A trained negotiator from the Greenville Police Department was brought in to assist with the dialogue. Despite repeated requests for Heiligenberg to step away from the firearms and comply with officers, he repeatedly entered and exited his home while continuing to hold onto the weapons.
Recognizing the escalating threat, the Union City Police Department activated its Special Emergency Tactical Team (SETT). The team responded swiftly and took control of the situation. Utilizing an MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle and a distraction device, officers were able to safely take Heiligenberg into custody without further incident.
Heiligenberg was immediately transported to a local hospital where he will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to ensure his well-being.
The Union City Police Department is committed to providing all necessary support to Heiligenberg during this time, in accordance with mental health protocols.
The suspect faces charges of Intimidation (Level 5 felony) and Criminal Recklessness with a Firearm (Level 6 felony). The department is also working in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to investigate the illegal possession of the sawed-off shotgun and may pursue additional federal charges related to the firearm.
Union City Police, expressed gratitude to the community for their cooperation during the incident, particularly those who followed the shelter-in-place request to ensure public safety. "This was a tense and potentially dangerous situation, but thanks to the quick response of our officers, along with the expertise of outside agencies, we were able to bring it to a peaceful resolution," said Director of Public Safety Mark Ater. "The safety of our residents is always our top priority, and we greatly appreciate the community’s support."
